What Is UPI?

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) lets customers pay instantly from their bank account using a phone app — the default way India pays online. Here's how it works for shops.

Last updated: June 2026

UPI, or Unified Payments Interface, is a real-time payment system that lets people pay directly from their bank account using a phone app — by scanning a QR code or approving a payment request. There are no card numbers to enter and no long checkout forms.

How UPI works

At checkout, the customer chooses UPI, approves the payment in their banking or payments app, and the money moves instantly. The shop gets immediate confirmation that the order is paid.

Why UPI matters for online shops

In India, UPI is the default way people pay. For a small shop, that means:

  • Less friction — customers pay with an app they already use daily
  • Instant confirmation — you know an order is genuine before you pack it
  • Lower fees on small orders — UPI is typically cheaper than card processing for low-value purchases

Because it removes the most fiddly part of checkout (typing card details), UPI tends to improve a store's conversion rate.

UPI vs other payment methods

UPI is not a replacement for everything. Cards still matter for large or international orders, and cash on delivery remains popular with first-time buyers. A well-run shop offers all three and lets the customer choose. Behind the scenes, these methods are processed through a payment gateway.

How to accept UPI

With a modern, no-code store builder, accepting UPI is a setting you switch on — not an integration you build. Learn more about selling with UPI on Angadio.
